Frequently Asked Questions (What the Dub?!)
Where can I play What the Dub?!
How do I play What the Dub?! remotely?
In What the Dub?! players use any browser enabled device to enter text and vote. However, when playing with remote players, they'll need a way to see the host's screen in order to view the video clips. Like all party games, local co-op is the easiest and best way to play. Obviously, that isn't always possible. To get a remote game started, refer to your platform of choice below and use the step-by-step guide to connect.
Playing on PC/Mac and PS4 is fairly simple. Xbox One and Nintendo Switch require the use of streams. If the idea of streaming to Youtube/Twitch isn't ideal, we suggest starting a Zoom meeting and placing your laptop/tablet in front of your screen. It's a low tech/low budget workaround. No streaming accounts needed. As long as the other players can see and hear your screen, you should be all set.
Zoom
- Open Zoom and start a new meeting.
- Invite players to your meeting.
- Click Share Screen.
- Select your desktop and make sure "Share Sound" and "Optimize for Video Clip" (in the lower left corner) are selected.
- Open What The Dub?! and start a game!

Steam Workshop Guide
Step One: Adhere to Guidelines
Step Two: Clip Selection
- All video clips must be in MP4 format using the h.264 codec.
- If unsure about your clip's codec, utilize free tools like ffmpeg or Handbrake for conversion.
- Short clips under 8 seconds are most effective.
- Clips can have the dub section at the start, middle, or end.
- Each pack can contain up to 100 clips.
- We recommend uploading a minimum of 10 clips per pack for a full 10 round game experience.
Step Three: Subtitle Your Clips
- Every video clip requires a corresponding subtitle file in .srt format.
- To create a subtitle file, you can use the Dub Tool by community member deusprogrammer (Available online or desktop app). Alternatively, try Aegisub (free).
- Ensure the video and subtitle files share identical names (e.g., clip1.mp4 and clip1.srt).If you’re using the Dub Tool, this is done automatically.
- Include dialogue in your subtitles and distinctly mark the dub section with [male_dub] or [female_dub] tags, depending on the character speaking. Example:
1
00:00:00,120 --> 00:00:02,680
Woman: How do you like your coffee?
2
00:00:02,680 --> 00:00:05,820
[male_dub]
Step Four (Optional): Prep for Twitch Streamers
If you're aiming to make your clips accessible to Twitch streamers:
- Include a JPEG thumbnail for each video clip. This aids streamers who activate the "Twitch chat picks the clips" option to easily pick your clips.
- Ensure each thumbnail shares the same file name as its corresponding video (e.g., clip1.mp4 and clip1.jpg).
- Thumbnails should be 492x244 pixels. Images of other sizes will be automatically adjusted to fit this dimension which may result in the image being skewed.
Step Five: Organize Your Content
- Download our provided zip template.
- Place all video files into the videoclips folder, the subtitle files in the subtitles folder, and the optional thumbnail images in the thumbnails folder.
- There's an editable preview image which will act as your clip pack's thumbnail on the Steam Workshop directory. Use an engaging image or even a screenshot from one of your clips. This preview image should be called preview.jpg and must be less than 1 MB in size.
Step Six: Get Your Clips Online
- Launch What the Dub?! game.
- Navigate to the in-game options and select “Steam Workshop”.
- Click “Create Clip Pack”, then choose the folder with your clips, subtitles, and preview image.
- Confirm the clips included and ensure the count matches your intended upload.
- Name your clip pack (e.g., Bob’s Killer Clips) and click save.
- Finalize your upload on Steam by updating the pack’s description, adding more images if needed, and sharing with the community.
Step Seven: Updating Packs
Adding more clips? Fixing a typo? If so, updating your pack is just as easy as creating one.
- Launch What the Dub?! game.
- Navigate to the in-game options and select “Steam Workshop”.
- Click “Update Clip Pack”, then select the pack you’re updating.
- Choose the folder with your revised clips, subtitles, and preview image. You will need to reupload all assets in the pack, not just the revised files.
- Click save. Once the files are uploaded the changes will be pushed to any users subscribed to your pack.
